August was a boring month. We didn't start class until August 21st and other than the melanoma scare I really didn't do anything of interest. That means we're skipping ahead to September.
I am not looking forward to this semester. We have to take physiology and everyone I have talked to has said nothing but bad things about that class. It's really hard to care about a class that doesn't appear to have much relevance to a future PA. The lectures are two hours long too which doesn't help at all. Some of the material will be review from undergraduate classes but they won't test you on that stuff. You'll be tested on the smallest little details of body systems you'll never need to know in the future. I'm being a negative Nancy. Let's talk about the fun parts of September.
On yet another volunteering expedition I got to take a free trip on a chartered bus out to Seneca Rocks to clean up the park. We were given a free lunch and a chance to hike up the trail to the top of the rocks. Like every park I have talked about on this blog I would recommend visiting. The pictures simply don't do it justice.
Another fun thing I did in September was visit the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia and Hersheypark. For those not familiar the Mutter Museum is a medical history and science museum with some of the most amazing specimens you will probably ever see. There are some pictures of their more popular specimens online but in my opinion those weren't even the most interesting. It is a 5 drive from Morgantown but it is absolutely worth it.
Hersheypark is less worth it. I had heard stories about this place my entire life and pictured it as a chocolate wonderland. In reality it was a normal amusement park with some Hershey mascots, merchandise and candy. The Chocolatier restaurant outside the park did have the best milkshake I have ever had but the park itself was a disappointment. Skip the park, drink the milkshake, go on the factory tour and build your own one pound Reese's cup if you go.
I almost forgot to include this semester's schedule. The 8:00 a.m. start times have not been easy after two semesters of 9:00 a.m. start times. We do have classes with dental students and random master's students which is a nice change from either being on our own in our little group of 13 or in class with the 26 Physician's Assistant students. The large classes make it feel like undergrad again. It's a really busy semester but it's the final one before clinical rotations start. If I can finish this semester, I'll be halfway done with this program and one step closer to having a full-time job and a life again.
